An automobile crashes on the side of the highway. Every passing car slows down. Each hopes to catch a glimpse of the horror.
What
is it, exactly, that makes taking a peek into terror so necessary?
Mankind has a history of violence. It is deep within our roots, in our
core. The frightful pump of adrenaline that can only come from shock.
Our stomachs churn. We cover our eyes, only to peer between our fingers.
Since I was eight years old – when Tony Todd scared me into sleeping
with the lights on for ten years – I have been intrigued by films that
can evoke such intense emotions within us. Disgusting, disturbing, f*cked up films that challenge us to make it to the end credits. Who would make
such movies? And, maybe more importantly, why would anyone want to watch
them in the first place?
Admit it: like me, you love it when a story sticks with you. I
decided to begin this venture into the world of disturbing cinema,
ranking each film in order of my personal honest opinion. These movies will not
disappoint you – nor will they inspire you. They will shake you. They
will sear themselves into your brain. They will push limits, and they
will break social boundaries. The rankings on this list will update and
change as needed. It will contain spoilers. These stories will not
necessarily involve bloody, horrible murder, but they certainly will
each revolve around unforeseen problems and complex situations; each
will be an open can of worms.
Disclaimer: You may end up needing to screen
Elf each night just to ease yourself to sleep... I did... for reaaal though.
