Mama

Yo Mama’s so ugly…

Victoria and Lilly (Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse) are in a bit of a predicament.  They’re father has just murdered their mother.   Aaaand has now crashed their car into the forest, which is devoid of any signs of human life.  The two girls, currently aged three and one years old, do not understand what is happening and are left alone in an abandoned shack.  Fortunately for them, some unknown entity is there, to overlook and feed them a dinner of cherries every night.  Five years later, Daddy’s identical twin brother, Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), is still hard at work, searching for any signs of his missing brother and nieces.  To his delight, the girls are finally found, but are in an almost feral like state.  It doesn’t seem to bother anyone and even though the sisters are scary as shit, Uncle Lucas and girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain) fight to win custody of the pair.  Little do they know - Victoria and Lilly come with an insufferable guest…

….

It’s Mama.  There, I said it!!

My intrigue behind watching this movie, started after I saw the motion test footage for Mama’s character - which is honestly, much more spine chilling than the actual movie.  Mama is played by actor Javier Botet - who was diagnosed with a disorder called Marfan Syndrome when he was just five years old.  This illness causes appendages to become uncommonly protracted and slim.  Botet decided to use this disorder to his advantage as an actor - for such films as in Mama and Rec.  The long skinny body definitely gives Mama a ghastly allusion - however so much computer animation was laid over top the actor - that his gestures became a lot less striking.  Not a total spoiler, but I thought that the film might have been better off going “The Ring” route - and making our main malefactor a creepy, yet realistic looking babe with greasy hair in her face.  But that’s just my opinion.  Take a peek at the test footage below!

Despite the way Mama looked, I don't have anything to complain about.  The story was morbidly compelling.   All of the acting, especially the two young main characters, was entertaining.  Lilly gives the audience some good laughs - sitting on the floor, eating moths and being weird. There was some super smart cinematography happening at moments, i.e.. the opening shot of the movie.  Great sound design, the noises Mama makes will haunt your dreams.  All in all - this was a fun film and I would suggest it to anyone.. anyone except GoT fans.  If you're a Jaime Lannister lover, prepare to be disappointed.. seriously, he's in a coma for half the story.

Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, this 2013 film is better than your average horror movie - especially if you’re into women who look like Freakazoid.  The new #25.

You can purchase this movie online from Apple iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Xbox, Sony Entertainment and Redbox Instant.  Or get the DVD from Netflix, Amazon DVD and Amazon Bluray.
