Humanoids from the Deep (1980)

Budding, attractive girls in bikinis beware!

Also known as Monster, Humanoids from the Deep is a science fiction monster movie that any old-time “creature horror” fan will adore.  As straightforward as you can get, there is no need to analyze this provocative gorefest!  Life is relatively quiet for the residents of a sleepy fishing village in the Pacific Northwest.  When their salmon start disappearing, the townsfolk aren’t sure what to do to replenish their primary commodity.  As it turns out, their precious salmon have been exposed to DNA experiments, causing the fish to mutate into enormous half man-half fish behemoths.  The evidently all male beasts are steadfast on breeding, as they start killing off the town’s men, and procreating with the women.  Take heed people - this movie is heavily rapey.

I was surprised to find out that this marginally sexist movie was actually directed by a woman -- Barbara Peeters.   Supposedly, she was not the leading pick for the position and was criticized for it.  It was suggested that her vision for the film was not scandalous enough to entertain horror fans -- seeing as the male deaths excelled, while the female scenes were left ambiguous.  James Sbardellati, the second unit director, was brought on to re-shoot the rape scenes - which was left unknown to a great deal of the cast and crew.  Both Peeters and star Ann Turkel requested to have their names taken off to no avail.  As a grown woman, I was personally not insulted by this film.  If this movie was out in theaters at present, I most likely would have viewed it as an interpretation of the rape culture we’re said to be living in today.  And besides - the gory special effects and slimy monster costumes were outstanding.  Giant, oozy fish men with exposed brains, pointy teeth and extended arms -- what’s not to love?  Just don’t expect to see me wearing a two piece at the beach in the near future.
Coming in at #23, Humanoids from the Deep.

You can catch this movie on Netflix Instant!
