What did I just watch...
While that line could apply to many of the movies on this list - “Kill List” really hit the nail in the coffin.. from it’s open ending, to it’s several changes in genre, this movie left me totally baffled. Directed by Ben Wheatley, this 2011 film tells the story of Jay (Neil Maskell), a former British soldier. It’s implied that Jay is suffering from some failed mission in Kiev - which has left him with an almost post traumatic stress disorder, unabling him to work and causing huge problems with his home life and bank account. With the encouragement of his wife (MyAnna Buring), Jay decides to accept a job offer from his friend and former soldier, Gal (Michael Smiley). We soon find out that both Jay and Gal had previously become hitmen after leaving the military. Gal reconnects with Jay, for a client who has a list of three people he wants killed. Easy enough. Until strange things start happening.. victims thanking Jay before they die.. vandalism on his family’s home.. groups of people meeting in the woods. Something weird is clearly going on. But what that is - you will most likely not guess, and you will most definitely be scared shitless by.
I’ll be honest with you - I watched this movie in two sittings (working girl here..!). The first night, I started watching “Kill List”, a family drama turned hitman action thriller. The second night, I was surprised to be watching “Kill List”, a supernatural psychological horror movie. Is this the same movie?? Technically, this movie is labeled under “British Horror” - though it is so much more versatile than that description. No matter how crazy shit gets, it remains a genuinely relatable film - mainly because the acting is so engaging and honest. Apparently, the actors were allowed to improvise and create back stories for their characters. The combination of quick cuts, realistic sound editing and improvised dialogue, makes the whole movie seem real - which makes the finale even more terrifying. Not for the faint hearted, this movie get massively violent at moments - memorably known for a scene involving a hammer. However, no matter the amount of blood and gore, the most terrifying part of this movie is that nothing is ever explained. So, if you are expecting a movie that gives you all the answers, “Kill List” may not be the one for you. But if you are looking for a smart, shocking, beautifully shot, well acted, f*cked up movie - I strongly suggest checking out “Kill List.” What can I say, it did replace “Videodrome” at number 10.
You can watch on Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime!
