A Serbian Film

I will NEVER watch this movie again.

I would like to shout at the top of my lungs “this movie was made by Srđan Spasojević!!  He did it!  It’s his fault!  He made this!  GET HIM!”.  I would like every person to know that Srđan Spasojević is responsible for writing, producing AND directing this offensive “erotic thriller”.. but that would be wrong of me.  For those of you who are not familiar with A Serbian Film, you may want to keep it that way.  But if you really must know, here goes.  Miloš (Srđan Todorović), a retired porn star, is down on his luck (and his moolah $$$), ever since he quit his successful lewd career to get married and start a family.  Vukmir (Sergej Trifunović), a powerful figure in pornography, presents Miloš with an offer he can’t refuse.  A starring role in his new film for a huge undisclosed amount of money - the only catch is, Miloš must be unaware of everything they are about to shoot.  He (obviously) discovers that he has been drafted into a snuff film, full of every terrible thing you can imagine - violence, rape, murder, pedophilia, necrophilia, etc.  A real family film here.

Because of the graphic nature of this movie, film festival audiences were given one last chance to leave the theater before viewing A Serbian Film.  It is banned in Spain, Finland, Portugal, France, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore.  Many scenes in this film are disturbing and plain ol' f’cked up - but one stands out in particular.  Srđan Spasojević really succeeded in writing one of the most distasteful scenes in a movie ever, involving.. newborn.. infant.. rape.  I kid you not.  Here’s my thing - if you’re going to write the most offensive scene of all time, at least make the rest of the movie palatable.  Nothing in this movie stood out to me.  Poor acting.  Inconsistent writing.  A few shots in this movie were nice - but being shot on the Red One Digital Camera, I expected better.  In my opinion, there are just NO redeeming qualities about A Serbian Film.  If you want to see a film based off it’s notoriety - then yeah, watch this movie.  But if you want to watch something of actual value and relevance, you can probably skip this one.

Netflix removed this movie entirely from their site in 2011.
Difficult to find - you can purchase on Amazon DVD for $16.01.
